Magic Minds and Paradigms

Magic Minds and Paradigms - Music by Amy Bryce, Film by Lois de Silva

Ahead of the culmination of our MECHANIKA competition on October 16th in the Brunel Tunnel Shaft, we wanted to introduce some of the incredibly talented composers and visual artists that we will be showcasing, and to find out a little more about their projects. Here’s an interview with composer Amy Bryce, and animator Lois de Silva about their piece ‘Magic Minds and Paradigms’...

We were excited to see that you had decided to visit the space before submitting your first ideas to us. How much would you say this affected the content of your new piece?
Our visit yo the Brunel Shaft provided us with a bank of ideas and resources; the Shaft itself became the foundations of our work. In fact, we decided to shoot footage at the tunnel and craft it into our film.

And as well as the visual aspect to the piece, did your visit inspire you musically at all Amy?
Definitely - the resonant acoustics of the space have inspired a unique way of using the whole ensemble. Very soft, scuttling sounds could be heard clearly and were very effective when I tested them out. The shape of the space gives an astonishing reverb which carries a quiet solo melody with an interesting body and depth.

So the venue is clearly very important to your work. How much were you inspired by Brunel himself?
Although Brunel’s Industrial era has long passed, the basis of his work remains hugely important and lives on in our world today. To reflect this, our film features ghost-like creatures, similar to the ghosts of Brunel’s history which live on in this tunnel.
